1800 - The Ottawa, Chippewa and Pottawatomie Indian tribes inhabited the region now known as Elkhart.
1827 - The families of Jesse Rush and Andrew Naffsinger settled on the northwest bank of the St. Joseph River.Isaiah Rush, born May 16, 1828, to Jesse and Mary Rush, was the first white settler baby born in Elkhart County.
1831 - Dr. Havilah Beardsley and his wife, Rachael Calhoun Beardsley, cousin of Vice-President John C. Calhoun, purchased one square mile of land from Pierre Morain, a Pottawaomie Chief. The price, $1,500. Beardsley chose to name the area Elkhart because the island at the confluence of the Elkhart and St. Joseph Rivers is said to resemble the shape of an elk's heart.
